The Last of Us has emerged as one of HBO's most successful dramas of the 2020s, drawing from the immensely popular PlayStation franchise. Featuring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the acclaimed thriller chronicles survivors of a viral fungal outbreak that transformed most of the global population into mutated zombies.
Season 3 Production Paused for World Cup
Season two launched in Spring 2025 and, despite sparking debate, attracted nearly 37 million viewers per episode. With an enormous devoted following anticipating season three, which will centre on Kaitlyn Dever as WLF soldier Abby, production recommenced in March 2026. However, filming has now been halted, leading some fans to question whether the epic finale will materialise.
Fans can breathe easy: The Last of Us season three itself is not cancelled and will still arrive eventually. Filming has simply been postponed to accommodate World Cup matches in Vancouver. Screen Rant reported that filming is paused from 1st June to 28th June, verified by the British Columbia directory for TV and film productions. According to Men's Journal, industry sources identified the World Cup as the main cause for the postponement, though reports have left some viewers worried.
Fan Reactions
One sceptical viewer speculated on X: "They'll cancel the season any minute now, just watch." Someone else remarked: "Hopefully it's an indefinite pause." Another posted: "This series turned into a total joke, a complete mess—I even dropped it myself." Nevertheless, plenty of fans remain excited. One Redditor explained: "Hiatus vs Canceled are two entirely different things. Production is not canceled." Another commented: "I can't wait to see it."
Production Schedule and Storyline
Production will allegedly resume at the end of June before continuing until 27th November. The third season will follow Abby's arduous three-day journey through Seattle alongside Lev (portrayed by Kyriana Kratter), a teenage member of a cult called the Seraphites. Audiences will also learn more about her harrowing backstory, which led to her catastrophic confrontation with Ellie (Ramsey) and Joel (Pascal) at the start of season two. Reach PLC has contacted HBO for comment. The Last of Us is available to stream on Sky, NOW, and HBO Max.
