Thriller fans are in for a high-stakes treat as acclaimed British actress Anna Maxwell Martin joins forces with Sophie Turner in a gripping new series from Prime Video. Titled Steal, the six-part show promises a binge-worthy, high-octane experience and launches in full on 21 January 2026.
A Heist That Shatters the Everyday
The series centres on Zara, an ordinary office worker played by Sophie Turner. Her mundane life at pension fund investment firm Lochmill Capital is violently upended when a brutal gang storms the premises, demanding billions in cash. Forced to comply with their orders, Zara and her close friend Luke, portrayed by Archie Madekwe, are thrust into the heart of the "heist of the century".
Leading the official investigation is DCI Rhys, a character brought to life by Jacob Fortune-Lloyd. However, Rhys is a recently relapsed gambling addict, struggling to keep his personal financial demons at bay while pursuing the criminals. As the official probe raises more questions than answers, Zara decides to take matters into her own hands.
Martin's Intriguing and Powerful Role
While specific details of Anna Maxwell Martin's character are being kept under wraps, the trailer shows her in a commanding, detective-like role. In a tense moment, she warns Zara, "tell us what you know", or MI5 "could kill you". This continues Martin's celebrated streak in crime dramas, following powerful performances in shows like A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, Ludwig, and Until I Kill You.
Her role in Until I Kill You was particularly noteworthy, where she portrayed real-life victim Delia Balmer. Martin earned three prestigious awards for her performance, achieved through a distinctive method. She deliberately avoided meeting Balmer before filming to craft her own interpretation, relying instead on footage from the writer's meetings.
"I've played quite a few real people and I have never met them before. I don't choose to do that, that's how I work," Martin explained. Her approach focuses purely on the character's responses and interactions, rather than external research.
Early Buzz and Critical Acclaim
The series has already generated significant excitement. Vernon Sanders, Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, hailed Steal as a "uniquely thrilling ride". While not based on true events, critics like those at Good Housekeeping have described its premise as "scarily real".
Fans have been quick to express their enthusiasm online, particularly with the casting of Anna Maxwell Martin. On the trailer's social media posts, viewers declared their immediate interest, with one stating, "Well, if Anna Maxwell Martin is in it, I'll be watching!" Others praised the show's original and exciting premise.
All six episodes of Steal will be available to stream on Prime Video from 21 January 2026.
