Coronation Street actor Calum Lill has revealed his grandmother's fury after discovering his character Joel Deering is a suspected murderer. The 28-year-old, who plays the charming lawyer with a hidden dark side, filmed his gran Sue's priceless reaction as she watched the episode where Joel battered missing Lauren Bolton with a chair leg.
The TikTok clip has since gone viral, amassing eight million views — more than the show's typical audience. In the video, Sue exclaims: 'You mean to tell me my grandson's a killer? You battered her! I can't believe that. Honest to goodness!'
Calum credits his gran for his acting career, as she used her hard-earned money to pay for his acting classes from the age of 14 and drove him to lessons. 'She's a working class woman from Manchester; she's so proud of me, but I knew her reaction would be priceless,' he said.
Off-screen, Calum has also been keeping a secret: he proposed to his long-term girlfriend Roberta McClarron after seven months of planning. The ring had been locked in his dressing room at Corrie and travelled through airport security four times before he finally popped the question.
Despite his on-screen villainy, Calum hopes to one day play a character his grandmother would approve of. 'I must have a dodgy face, because I've played a string of bad 'uns,' he joked. 'It would be nice to have a little break from playing baddies.'
