Coronation Street star Tina O'Brien has broken her silence on the explosive storyline that saw her character Sarah Platt revealed as Theo Silverton's killer. The Monday episode ended with a cliffhanger flashback showing Sarah striking Theo with scaffolding, causing his death, and Gary Windass helping cover it up.
The Explosive Reveal
For weeks, Sarah Platt and Gary Windass had been acting suspiciously, leading their partners Kit Green and Maria Connor to suspect an affair. However, the truth emerged during a dramatic dinner party when a flashback unveiled the events of Theo's death. Sarah had received a strange text from Todd Grimshaw, luring her to his flat, where Theo was waiting on scaffolding. Fearing for Todd's safety, Sarah confronted Theo, who tried to provoke her with vicious words and threats. In terror, she shoved him and struck him with a piece of scaffolding, causing him to fall to his death.
Sarah then called Gary, who helped conceal the crime by instructing her to establish an alibi. In the present day, Gary expressed regret for answering her call that night, and Sarah pleaded with him to keep the secret to avoid prison. The episode ended with Gary deciding he could no longer keep the secret, fearing losing his marriage to Maria and contact with his family, leaving Sarah in a state of panic.
Tina O'Brien on Her Soap Future
Speaking about the storyline, Tina O'Brien said: "There was a lot of debate in the green room as soon as we were told there was going to be a murderer. A lot of people were playing Cluedo... So by the time it got to me to go for my meeting, I was a bit like, I think it's me! But I genuinely didn't worry, at the end of the day this job is incredible, but to be an actor is not necessarily a job for life. So, I just was really excited to be given the honour of being the murderer."
Regarding Sarah's potential prison sentence, O'Brien added: "Yeah, absolutely she could be going to prison this time. If she’d have called the police straight away and explained what happened, she would have been in a much better situation, because it was clearly not premeditated... But to cover it up, to actively cover something up, she knows that she crossed a line that she can't come back from."
O'Brien also shared her reaction to first receiving the script: "I was really shocked, but for me, personally, I completely understand how it happened, why it happened. For me to get into her character and her head, I feel like, in that moment, she didn't feel like she had any other choice."
Coronation Street continues on weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV and ITV X.
