Coronation Street viewers have taken to social media to predict a potential major death following Wednesday night's special episode, which focused on Shona Platt's pregnancy complications. The episode revealed that Shona (Julia Goulding) and husband David (Jack P. Shepherd) are expecting a baby girl, but a mass on the baby's neck has left the couple facing a difficult decision between an abortion or a risky surgery.
During the hospital scene, doctors explained that the mass could block the baby's airway or cause premature labour. They offered the option of termination under 24 weeks, or an EXIT procedure—a complex surgery performed while the baby is still attached to the placenta, carrying risks for both mother and child. Shona later told David she had decided to proceed with the surgery, stating, 'This is my body and my decision.'
Fans on Reddit speculated that Shona might not survive the procedure, potentially echoing the trauma David experienced when his first wife Kylie was murdered in 2016. One user wrote, 'I think after 2025 there is a potential but upsetting twist that Shona might indeed die from that surgery... it will bring a heartbreaking trauma for David.' Another added, 'I think there's a heartbreaking twist that Shona might end up leaving next year but I think she will survive the surgery.'
The episode itself divided opinion due to its non-traditional storytelling methods, including inner monologues and characters addressing the camera. One viewer criticised the approach on X, saying, 'Good tv is supposed to follow the golden rule of "show, don't tell" yet the producers insist on dumbing it all down.'
