Devoted viewers of Coronation Street have been left baffled and amused after spotting a glaring grammatical error that made it to air during Monday night's episode of the iconic ITV soap.
The Glaring Gaffe
The mistake occurred during a scene featuring newcomer Jodie Ramsey, who was introduced as the long-lost sister of established character Shona Platt. This revelation itself raised eyebrows, as Shona had never mentioned having a sister during her decade living on the famous Manchester cobbles.
In the episode, which continued the fallout from the show's historic crossover event with Emmerdale, Jodie was seen ignoring a persistent mystery caller. The screen of her mobile phone clearly displayed the notification: "You have a 10 missed calls." The nonsensical wording, which should have read "10 missed calls" or "You have 10 missed calls," was immediately pounced upon by eagle-eyed fans.
Fan Fury and Funny Reactions
Viewers quickly took to online forums, with Reddit becoming a hub for their disbelief. One exasperated fan wrote, "Who wrote this?! You’d think that they’d proofread their graphics before the episode gets sent to air!"
The blunder prompted a wider and often humorous discussion about the common pitfalls of depicting mobile phone use in soaps. One viewer highlighted the classic error of characters holding phones to their ears while the screen remains brightly lit. Another joked that the notification must have been written by Italian video game icon Super Mario.
Others lamented the timeless trope of characters engaged in shady dealings leaving their phones unlocked for anyone to see incriminating texts. "MEET ME IN GINNEL. BRING CRACK. DONT B L8," one fan quipped, parodying the stereotypical message.
A History of On-Screen Slip-Ups
This is not the first time Coronation Street's continuity has been called into question. Towards the end of last year, fans flooded social media to point out that scenes appeared to have aired "in the wrong order," based on the time shown on clocks in the Rovers Return.
One fan noted a confusing sequence where Tyrone was seen moping in the pub, then working in the garage, and then back in the pub in the exact same position, all without a clear passage of time. This led to discussions about Weatherfield's elastic chronology, where time "contracts and expands as required."
Some viewers suggested production teams could avoid such graphical errors by using the method employed by some other shows, where text messages pop up as on-screen graphics rather than being filmed on a prop phone.
Coronation Street continues to air weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
