Neil Patrick Harris has been cast in Doctor Who, with showrunner Russell T Davies confirming the actor will play 'the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced'. Harris is currently filming scenes for the BBC series, set to air in 2023 as part of the show's 60th anniversary.
The announcement follows the news that Ncuti Gatwa will become the 14th Doctor, replacing Jodie Whittaker. It remains unclear whether Harris will appear alongside returning Time Lord David Tennant or Gatwa's new incarnation. Tennant is currently filming for the 60th anniversary special.
Davies shared the news on Instagram, writing: 'Neil Patrick Harris, welcome to Cardiff! Playing the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced. Such a great actor, such a great man, it's an honour and a hoot.' Harris responded on his own page, saying: 'My current gig. Never looked more dashing. Thank you for inviting me into your Whoniverse.'
Harris joins newcomer Yasmin Finney, who will play a character named Rose. The name of Harris's character and further details about his role have not yet been revealed. Davies teased: 'But who, why, what is he playing? You'll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we're shooting now is off the scale.'
Davies, who revived Doctor Who in 2005, returns as showrunner for the 60th anniversary. He previously worked with Harris on the Channel 4 drama It's A Sin.
