Death In Paradise Shake-Up: Fan Favourite Exits as New Sergeant Arrives
Death In Paradise Cast Change: Darlene Out, Mattie In

The latest series of the beloved BBC detective drama Death In Paradise has premiered with significant cast changes that are sure to spark conversation among its dedicated fanbase. While viewers will be delighted to see the return of some familiar faces, they will also notice one prominent character's absence from the sun-drenched shores of Saint Marie.

A Fond Farewell to Darlene

In a move that was confirmed off-screen, actress Ginny Holder has departed the series, leaving behind her popular character Darlene Curtis. Holder shared an emotional statement regarding her exit, expressing deep gratitude for her time on the show.

"Thank you so much to the BBC and Red Planet Pictures for giving me the absolute gift of playing Darlene," Holder said. "I loved her deeply, and saying goodbye to her has been far more emotional than I ever expected - I really do miss her."

She extended her thanks to the cast and crew, describing them as "a talented, kind, and joyful group of people" and praised writer James Hall for creating such a vivid character. "Darlene truly lifted straight off the page, and I'm so grateful to have been her voice," she added, indicating the profound connection she felt with the role.

Welcoming a New Face to Saint Marie

Stepping into the void left by Darlene is actress Catherine Garton, who joins the series as Sergeant Mattie Fletcher. Garton has already filmed her scenes in Guadeloupe, the Caribbean island that doubles as the fictional Saint Marie, and she couldn't be more enthusiastic about the experience.

"I loved it - everyone was really welcoming," Garton revealed. "Before going to Guadeloupe, I didn't quite know what to anticipate, then it exceeded any expectations I could have had. I love the island."

She described the location as "like a postcard" and "absolutely stunning," highlighting the culture, food, and collaborative atmosphere on set. "Everyone I work with is great. I don't have any complaints!" she exclaimed.

Introducing Sergeant Mattie Fletcher

Garton provided insight into her new character, Sergeant Mattie Fletcher, painting a picture of a dynamic and engaging addition to the police team.

"She's tenacious. She's really fun to play," Garton said. "She's sassy, but she's like your big sister who will tell you what's what, but you can also come to her if you need to."

She elaborated that Mattie is passionate about her work and the people she grows close to, particularly within the team. "She's also very determined, almost too determined sometimes…" Garton noted, hinting at potential storylines where this trait might lead to complications or breakthroughs in investigations.

Familiar Faces Return

Amidst these changes, fans will be reassured by the return of key characters. Don Gilet reprises his role as DI Mervin Wilson, leading the new series of episodes. Additionally, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, portrayed by Don Warrington, is back after his appearance in the Christmas special teased his continued involvement.

This blend of returning favourites and fresh talent ensures that Death In Paradise continues to evolve while maintaining the charm and intrigue that has made it a staple of BBC programming. The series promises to deliver its signature mix of tropical mystery and character-driven drama, with Mattie Fletcher poised to become a new fan favourite as she settles into life on the island.
