EastEnders is set to air a hard-hitting mental health storyline in which Phil Mitchell, played by Steve McFadden, attempts to take his own life while experiencing depression with psychotic symptoms.
The character has withdrawn from family and friends following the breakdown of his marriage to Kat, Sharon's new relationship with his cousin Teddy, and Ben's incarceration in America. Viewers will see Phil's mental health decline as he hides his depression, with hallucinations intensifying at a crisis point where he believes his life is no longer worth living.
The soap is working closely with The Samaritans, Rethink Mental Illness, the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), and Mind to ensure accurate and sensitive portrayal. Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw praised McFadden's performance, saying it 'thoughtfully portrayed the complex realities of depression and psychotic symptoms with compassion and understanding.'
Lorna Fraser of Samaritans said the team 'captured the reality of a mental health crisis' and highlighted the importance of showing men opening up. Kat Allin of Rethink Mental Illness hoped the story would 'spark meaningful conversations' and encourage early help-seeking. Wendy Robinson of CALM noted that bringing such stories to screen 'helps to break down the stigma surrounding suicide.'
