Daniel Mays is set to portray John Worboys, the notorious 'Black Cab Rapist', in a new ITV factual drama series titled 'Believe Me'. The series, created by Oscar-nominated writer Jeff Pope, will also feature actors Aimée-Ffion Edwards, Aasiya Shah, and Miriam Petche as three of Worboys' victims.
Worboys, one of Britain's most prolific serial rapists, was convicted in 2009 for sexually assaulting 12 women between 2006 and 2008. His method involved drugging women with laced champagne in his taxi. Police believe he may have had over 100 victims.
'Believe Me' will focus on the Metropolitan Police's failure to properly investigate two women's allegations, allowing Worboys to continue his attacks for years. The drama highlights the victims' fight for justice, including efforts to keep Worboys in prison during his first parole hearing eight years after his conviction.
Jeff Pope, known for factual dramas such as 'The Reckoning' and 'Appropriate Adult', said the series 'goes on an emotional journey with the victims... showing what happened when they reported being raped and assaulted, the pain and indignity of the process'. He added that the victims felt 'not being believed by the police... was as traumatising as the actual assaults'.
The series is produced by Pope's Etta Pictures in association with ITV Studios, with Julia Ford directing. Filming will take place in Cardiff with support from the Welsh Government via Creative Wales.
