BBC Breakfast Presenter Faces Backlash Over On-Air Comments
Naga Munchetty has faced significant criticism from viewers following what many have described as "rude" comments made towards her colleague Carol Kirkwood during the weather presenter's emotional final BBC Breakfast appearance. The incident occurred on Wednesday as Kirkwood concluded her remarkable 25-year tenure with the morning programme, sparking widespread speculation about the true nature of their professional relationship.
The Controversial Farewell Exchange
As Carol Kirkwood approached her final moments on air, she expressed surprise at Naga Munchetty's presence, stating: "Thank you all for coming - and even you, Nags!" Munchetty responded in a characteristically deadpan manner: "I’m just waiting for the countdown for you to go!" While presenting Kirkwood with a special illustration by Mr. Men author Adam Hargreaves - depicting her as Little Miss Sunshine in recognition of her lengthy career - the exchange took several awkward turns.
When an emotional Kirkwood declared she would treasure the gift, saying "It's going to have pride of place...", Munchetty interrupted with: "In the toilet?" The presenter then questioned whether Kirkwood had "stolen anything from all the time at BBC Breakfast?" before offering her a commemorative mug. The tension continued when a celebratory cake appeared, with Munchetty asking: "Are you going to break the habit of a lifetime and actually share the cake?" Kirkwood responded firmly: "No, Naga, absolutely not - why would I do that?" prompting Munchetty's retort: "Exactly. Why change it? We're only going to remember you one way."
Viewer Reaction and Social Media Speculation
The unusual exchange immediately sparked intense discussion across social media platforms, with numerous viewers expressing concern about the apparent tension between the two television personalities. One viewer commented on X: "[Carol] seems artificially chirpy to be honest. That Naga used to be quite rude to her and she just laughed. I’d have taken my mic off, gone over and lumped her one if I’d been Carol."
Another observer noted: "Naga didn’t do a pre-recorded solo tribute like the other newsreaders did who’ve worked with her for years. Instead she tried her usual gotcha tactics to embarrass Carol." A third viewer speculated more directly: "Maybe Naga and Carol really didn't get on." This incident comes amid broader concerns about workplace dynamics at BBC Breakfast, with Munchetty having previously faced allegations of bullying behaviour on set that escalated into a formal investigation.
Carol Kirkwood's Emotional Departure
Carol Kirkwood announced her decision to step down earlier this year, becoming visibly emotional while discussing her departure with co-presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent. The veteran weather presenter stated: "I am going to be leaving. It’s really, really hard for me to say this. I love my job. I love all of you guys, my weather colleagues, every department I work with, and, of course, all the viewers I've been so engaged with for many years."
She humorously added: "But it's great. I don't want to be coming in with my Zimmer frame when I can't reach the northern Isles anymore." Kirkwood emphasized her desire to spend more quality time with her husband Steve, explaining: "We have been married a couple of years ago but we are like ships passing in the night, so I'm so looking forward to doing that. I've still got my books, you know, I've got a few other bits and pieces. I want to travel. We want to travel as well."
As her voice began to break during the emotional farewell, Kirkwood told her colleagues: "I didn't want to get emotional, but you two are my friends, and I love you dearly so I am sorry I did." The departure marks the end of an era for BBC Breakfast, with Kirkwood having become a beloved fixture through her quarter-century of weather forecasting.
