The executive producer of Death in Paradise has spoken out after Ralf Little's decision to step down as the show's longest-serving detective. The 44-year-old actor played DI Neville Parker for almost five years on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie, but has now left to travel the world, leaving fans stunned as the search for his replacement begins.
Tim Key, the executive producer, released a statement thanking Little for his contribution. He said: 'Joining a successful show like Death in Paradise as the lead is a daunting and risky prospect, but Ralf’s confidence and talent shone through from day one. The audience response to Neville and his journey has been amazing. I can’t thank Ralf enough for everything he has brought to the show, on and off screen, and wish him all the very best for the future.'
Little addressed his exit in a video on the show's official Instagram account, saying: 'So, there you have it! The secret's out! My time on Saint Marie has come to an end. But, what an end! New adventures await Neville and he got to sail off into the sunset with his best friend... I just want to say, just an enormous thank you to everyone who watched and supported the show.'
He added: 'It has been an absolute privilege and pleasure to bring Neville Parker to all of you... When I look back at the time I spent on Death In Paradise, the way everyone took Neville into their hearts, it really has been one of the most magical and profound experiences of my entire life.'
Little succeeded previous leads Ben Miller, Kris Marshall, and Ardal O'Hanlon. Rumours suggest Inbetweeners star Simon Bird could be a potential replacement. The show's series 13 finale aired on Sunday night on BBC One.
