Netflix has added the critically lauded British television film 'Care', originally broadcast on the BBC, starring Sheridan Smith. The drama, filmed around Liverpool and The Wirral, follows single mother Jenny as she cares for her mother Mary, played by Alison Steadman, who suffers a stroke and develops dementia.
When health authorities refuse to take responsibility for Mary's care, Jenny is forced to provide round-the-clock care herself, straining their relationship. She receives minimal support from her sister Claire (Sinéad Keenan) and ex-husband Dave (Anthony Flanagan), while her government allowance falls short of her previous earnings.
The cast also includes Kevin Doyle, Tanya Moodie, and Rochenda Sandall. The Guardian awarded the series four stars, praising Smith's performance as her 'finest work yet' and a 'subtle, humane performance', and commending the series as 'delicately observed'.
Viewers have lauded the film on IMDb and Letterboxd, with one calling it 'heartbreakingly strong performances' and another saying it 'should make anyone reflect on how we look after the ill and elderly in this country'. The drama is essential viewing for nearly 6 million UK carers, according to Carers UK.
