Young Sherlock's Bristol Filming Locations Unveiled as Prime Video Thriller Launches
Prime Video's new murder mystery drama, Young Sherlock, has premiered on the streaming platform, starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the iconic detective in his formative years. The eight-part series follows a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes as he tackles his first major case after a killing at Oxford University threatens his freedom. Co-produced by action legend Guy Ritchie and featuring A-listers like Colin Firth, the show was largely filmed on-location, with Bristol meticulously transformed to resemble 19th-century Oxford, captivating viewers with its historical backdrop.
Bristol Streets Reimagined for Victorian Era
Broad Street served as the primary filming site, recreated to mirror a bustling 19th-century high street complete with traders, florists, butchers, barbers, taxidermists, and printers. Additional streets featured include All Saints Lane, Small Street, and Corn Street near St Nicholas Markets, along with Portland Square, Queen Square, and Frog Lane. To authentically reflect the 1800s setting, tarmac roads were covered with mud, and period details such as tram stops, vintage lampposts, newspaper vendors, market stalls, and carts were installed, immersing audiences in a Victorian streetscape.
Iconic Bristol Landmarks Doubling as Oxford Settings
Bristol Cathedral and Choir School provided the exterior shots for an Oxford concert hall, while The Georgian House Museum was used for both interior and exterior scenes of a main character's Oxford residence. Underfall Yard and the adjacent floating harbour areas were featured in key stunt sequences, with the director, Sarah Murray, highlighting the positive impact of hosting the production. Murray noted that filming hire income nearly replaced lost revenue, and the experience offered the team a fun, eye-opening glimpse into behind-the-scenes creativity, including special effects tests and set transformations with animals like horses and cows.
Additional Filming Locations Beyond Bristol
Beyond Bristol, filming for Young Sherlock also took place in Oxford, London, and Spain, adding depth to the series' global production scale. The show is now streaming exclusively on Prime Video, offering fans a thrilling dive into Sherlock Holmes' early adventures.
