EastEnders fans are in for a dramatic week as Denise Fox's secret blood cancer diagnosis is revealed during Kim Fox and Howie Danes' engagement party. The beloved character, played by Diane Parish, has been hiding her acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) from her family, but the truth comes out in devastating scenes.
Denise's Secret Struggle
Earlier this month, Denise learned she has AML, a fast-growing and aggressive type of blood cancer. She has only confided in close friend Yolande Trueman and husband Jack Branning, choosing to keep her health news secret after her grandson Jordan Fox was knocked down during Vicki Fowler and Ross Marshall's wedding celebrations. Despite repeated calls from her medical team to begin urgent treatment, Denise has ignored them, leaving Jack in despair.
Engagement Party Drama
Next week, the pressure mounts when Denise's diagnosis is revealed during Kim and Howie's engagement party. On Monday, Jack finds an unlikely confidante in Denise's ex, Phil Mitchell, and they discuss how to get through to her. Meanwhile, the Fox-Trueman family rallies around Chelsea Fox as Jordan recovers. When Kim shows off her engagement ring, Denise insists the family must celebrate the good news. However, she is later stunned when Phil confronts her about her diagnosis, and she throws him out.
Later that evening, everyone gathers at The Vic, but Denise panics when Jack and Phil arrive, fearing they will reveal her secret. When Kim makes a heartfelt speech, Denise struggles to contain her emotions and rushes to the toilets. A concerned Chelsea follows her but cannot get her to open up.
The Truth Comes Out
When Denise returns to the bar, she shocks everyone by announcing she has been diagnosed with cancer. As her family struggles to process the news, Kim is upset to discover Yolande already knew. Chelsea makes a call to her sister Libby Fox, sparking Libby's return to Walford later in the week. With the news finally out in the open, Denise steadies herself to return the hospital calls, learning she faces spending a month on the ward. As she falters once again, will her loved ones convince her to start the treatment she desperately needs?
EastEnders airs these scenes from Monday 15th June at 7.30pm on BBC One or stream first from 6am on iPlayer.
