Kym Marsh, best known for her decade-long role as Michelle Connor on Coronation Street, has captivated audiences in the Channel 5 thriller The Imposter. The four-part series, which aired last year, is packed with feuds, betrayal, and murder, leaving viewers 'hooked' on its twists and turns.
Plot and Cast
Marsh plays Amanda, the secret child of family matriarch Helen (Jackie Woodburne), who was given up for adoption in the UK. When Amanda arrives in Australia unexpectedly, Helen quickly embraces her. But questions arise: is Helen really who she says she is?
The synopsis reads: 'A sprawling seaside hotel sits at the heart of a dispute between matriarch Helen and her three adult children, Simon, Kate and Ian. The kids want to sell, but Helen is against the lucrative deal, despite her ailing health. But Helen also has a secret – an older child, Amanda, whom she gave up for adoption in the UK before the other kids were born. When Amanda turns up out of the blue, Helen embraces her, believing she is the answer to her problems. But is Amanda who she says she is? The lucrative hotel is the ultimate prize, and a twisted scheme soon spirals into betrayal and ultimately, murder.'
The cast also includes Don Hany, Dannii Minogue, and Jackson Gallagher.
Marsh on Her Character
Speaking about her role, Marsh told the Manchester Evening News: 'She's a complex, multi-layered individual. I think she's quite damaged; there's a lot in her past that eventually shows through and can't be hidden. Many difficult things have probably happened to her that we'll never fully know. But she's also cunning and resilient; she's a survivor, and she's quite funny.'
She added: 'I can't really draw on any personal experience for this role. Some of the things she does are so far removed from my own life that I couldn't take anything from myself, and in a way, that was quite nice. It meant I could allow myself to go to places I'd never normally go. I had free rein with her, really.'
Viewer Reception
Although the show has received mixed reviews, many viewers have been impressed and are hopeful for more episodes. All episodes of The Imposter are available to watch on Channel 5.
