The tenth and final episode of Widow's Bay, titled We Hope You Enjoyed Your Time!, brought a stormy end to the summer season on the eerie island. The Apple TV show has been a sleeper hit, with word-of-mouth buzz reminiscent of a bygone TV era. The finale revealed that the island's antiquated ways include human sacrifice, a practice not abandoned as long ago as viewers might think.
Ruth's Fate
The penultimate episode set up a trolley problem: kill sweet, doddering Ruth to break the curse. A brooch and genealogy identified her as the last descendant of Frances Warren. Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, tried pills and a pillow to kill her, but ultimately learned that Ruth had a child with a married man, who later married Tom. This means Tom's son Evan is a Warren descendant, and the only way he can leave the island is in a coffin. Bashir, unaware of the situation, shot Ruth to save his child, leaving her alive but gravely wounded.
The Shelter and Training Video
Back at the storm shelter, Patricia and Wyck struggled with dwindling supplies. Dale discovered a vintage training video explaining the island's history of human sacrifice. The video showed a "very fair, very rigorous selection process" where chosen offerings had to accept their fate. Those deemed "wanting" were thrown into the shelter to be consumed by a mysterious entity beneath the cellar hatch. The island communicated its needs through tolling church bells: one soul for each bell toll.
The Tolling Bells
The bells first tolled in the second episode, and now viewers know their significance. Kenny, locked in a cellar by PJ, became the first victim. The season ended with eight bell tolls, indicating the island is still hungry. Tom threw Ruth's brooch into the sea, suggesting she is dead.
Bashir and the Newborn
Bashir's wife gave birth, and their newborn faces the same fate as Evan: trapped on the island. Bashir now knows a descendant could lift the curse, setting up a central conflict for season two. With eight more sacrifices needed, the question remains: who will be next?
