5 Common Houseplants That Naturally Cool Your Home in Summer
5 Houseplants That Cool Your Home Naturally

As the hot weather persists across Britain, many households are seeking natural ways to keep their homes cool. One simple and effective solution is to introduce certain houseplants into your living space. While they won't replace an air conditioner, these plants can make rooms feel fresher and less stuffy through a process called transpiration, where plants release water vapour through pores on their leaves, adding moisture to the air and creating a cooling effect.

How Plants Cool Your Home

Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk, explains: "Plants 'sweat' like us. They take in water through their roots, send it to their leaves, and release it as vapour through tiny pores. This process is called transpiration. Similar to how sweat cools our skin, the vapour from the plants cools the air around them. Essentially, the more water a plant gives off, the more it cools the air around it." He adds that while it's not as powerful as air conditioning, adding moisture back into the air can make a room feel fresher and less stuffy, acting like small natural humidifiers.

Boston Fern

The Boston fern boasts high moisture output and helps purify the air. It thrives in bathrooms and kitchens where humidity is naturally higher. However, it is slightly more demanding than the areca palm, requiring regular misting and access to high humidity levels.

Aloe Vera

In addition to creating a cooling atmosphere, aloe vera plants require minimal watering, making them excellent for those seeking a low-maintenance option. The plant's gel is also useful for soothing sunburn, a handy benefit during hot summer months.

Rubber Plant

This striking plant makes an excellent addition to any household. Its broad leaves aid with humidity, and it is remarkably straightforward to maintain, even when kept indoors.

Peace Lily

The peace lily is another popular houseplant, known for its attractive cream blooms. It is recognized for purifying the air and suits any room. It is easy to care for and produces flowers from time to time.
