Aldi has confirmed that eggs will last longer without going bad if stored in the freezer. The discount supermarket giant teamed up with food waste storage expert Kate Hall to share advice on keeping staple foods fresh, including eggs, milk, bananas, and potatoes.
How to freeze eggs
According to Kate Hall, eggs can be frozen to extend their shelf life. She advises keeping them in the original box in the fridge or a cool pantry at a consistent temperature. To freeze, break the eggs out of their shells first. Eggs can be frozen as whites, yolks (with a pinch of salt or sugar), or combined. If freezing whole eggs, whisk them first to make mixing easier after defrosting.
Hall recommends freezing eggs in usable quantities, such as two for an omelette or three for a cake, flat in a labelled freezer bag. They can be defrosted quickly in a dish of cold water and used in any cooked dish.
Reducing food waste
The advice comes after research by Aldi found that the average UK shopper throws away £387 worth of food each year, and 70% admit to buying food they know they'll likely throw away. Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, said: "At Aldi, we’re committed to reducing food waste wherever we can across our supply chain. Now we’re on a mission to help shoppers minimise their food waste too, while getting even more value from their Aldi groceries at the same time."
Other food storage tips
Aldi has also shared tips on keeping bananas fresh for up to three weeks and preventing potatoes from sprouting. The supermarket was named the cheapest UK supermarket in April, beating Lidl, Tesco, Morrisons, and Asda.
