Jeremy Clarkson in New Pub Row with Council as PETA Slam Squirrel Menu Decision

Jeremy Clarkson has found himself in another tussle with his local council over his Cotswolds pub, while also coming under fire from animal welfare activists for a controversial menu addition. The former Top Gear host, who turned 65 on Friday, has submitted a planning application to West Oxfordshire District Council seeking approval to retain the hard surfacing of the staff car park and create extra parking spaces for punters at The Farmer's Dog.

The pub, near Burford, has seen a surge in visitors since Clarkson became owner. While Oxfordshire County Council has not voiced objections, it cautioned that if the local planning authority determines the car parks do not qualify as an 'established lawful use', Clarkson may need to submit a new application accompanied by traffic and flood risk assessments.

Clarkson's representative insists permission already exists for parking up to 170 vehicles and maintains the current application is merely about securing approval to preserve the existing hard-standing areas. They have urged the council to approve the plans 'without delay'. This is not the TV star's first clash with the council, having previously encountered issues regarding parking and a restaurant at his Diddly Squat Farm.

Meanwhile, Clarkson has been blasted for his intention to serve squirrel at his countryside inn. The broadcaster is set to include the critter on the bill of fare during a 'Dare Night' event that promises 'weird and wonderful' gastronomic delights. PETA condemned the food selection as a 'stunt', with Vice President of Programmes Elisa Allen describing squirrels as 'hardworking, intelligent, and sentient beings' and stating that 'only a hideous bully would take them from their life in a park and slice them up on a plate'.

Clarkson is offering the squirrel dish for £85 per person as part of the Dare Night, which will also feature pan-fried brains, lamb's hearts, and snail caviar. The evening, taking place later this month, will be featured in an upcoming episode of his Amazon series, Clarkson's Farm. Clarkson said: 'Fed up with beige, safe food? Want to try new things? Difficult things? Weird things? Well if you're intrigued, join us at the Farmer's Dog.'
