England World Cup Stars Donate Match Fees to Charity

England's World Cup squad has agreed to donate their match fees from the 2026 tournament in North America to charity, continuing a tradition established in 2007. Each player will give £2,000 per game to the England Footballers Foundation (EFF), which distributes the funds to good causes.

Over £5 Million Raised Since 2007

Since the scheme's inception, the Three Lions have raised more than £5 million for charities such as cancer research, UNICEF, and Help for Heroes. The initiative was launched by a group of England legends, including Gary Neville, David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry, and Jamie Carragher.

A spokesman for the EFF said: "The Players' Committee - consisting of Gary Neville, David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry and Jamie Carragher - established the EFF. It is the vehicle through which England players donate their match fees, and also their time, to support good causes."

Low-Key Charity Work

A source close to the team noted that the players prefer to keep their charitable efforts private. "It's not something they like to talk about but it perhaps goes against the image of top level footballers. Much of the good work they do in society stays under the radar whereas if they have problems it's all over social media," the source said.

Performance-Related Bonuses

While match fees are donated, players can earn performance-related bonuses. The Football Association has reportedly structured a significant bonus pool, with each player potentially earning up to £500,000 if England win the World Cup. Manager Thomas Tuchel is understood to earn around £5 million a year, with additional bonuses depending on tournament success.

The Football Association has not responded to a request for comment on the donation scheme.
