Homeowner Dee Bassi has shared how a single renovation decision helped her family stay cool during the June heatwave without relying on air conditioning. The luxury homeowner took to TikTok to explain that her choice of porcelain tiles proved unexpectedly beneficial as temperatures soared across the UK.
Porcelain Tiles Provide Unexpected Cooling
In her TikTok video, Bassi admitted that the heatwave made her wish she had installed air conditioning. However, she expressed gratitude for her porcelain tiles, which stayed "surprisingly cool" underfoot even with sunlight streaming through the windows. The tiled area quickly became "everyone's favourite spot" in the house.
"It's funny because when we renovated, I chose them because I loved the look, durability and practicality," Bassi said. "I never really thought about how much I would appreciate them during a British heatwave."
Viewer Concerns and Underfloor Heating Solution
One viewer questioned whether the tiles made the flooring "freezing for 10 months of the year." Bassi clarified that while the tiles can get cold, underfloor heating makes them "bliss to walk on in the winter."
Scientific Explanation for Porcelain's Cooling Effect
According to Alba Flooring, porcelain tiles are dense, non-porous, and offer exceptional thermal properties that keep them naturally cooler underfoot. "Unlike wood, laminate, or vinyl, which can absorb and retain heat, porcelain reflects warmth and maintains a more comfortable surface temperature," the company explained.
Alba Flooring also highlighted the "science behind the coolness," noting that porcelain has low thermal conductivity, meaning it does not transfer heat easily. This property, combined with moisture resistance and easy cleaning, makes porcelain one of the best floor tile options for summer.
UK Heatwave Alert and NHS Warning
The NHS has issued a warning as the Met Office announced a four-day amber heat warning for much of England and Wales, effective until 11:59pm on Thursday, June 25. Temperatures are expected to exceed 30°C across large parts of the country, with some areas in the South East potentially reaching 38°C.
