A British gardener has recommended a plant that will bring a 'wave of floral colour and scent' to any garden. The beautiful plant grows quickly in summer and will be offering flowers in abundance in no time.
Tom Strowlger, a gardening expert, shared his advice on caring for sweet peas to ensure they grow well. The sight and smell of sweet peas are a must in any garden. Growing vigorously up supports, almost aiming for the sun, they want to give so much. Sweet peas will grow quickly this month and will be offering flowers in abundance in next to no time.
To get the very best out of our plants, we must do some simple tasks. A few minutes a day will make the difference in the displays on offer. A regular feed is important as sweet peas are very hungry plants. The rate of growth is such that they need nutritious energy to achieve their maximum potential.
It would be sad to achieve anything less, so a sprinkle of pellets around the base of the plant every few weeks will keep them very happy. The roots of sweet peas grow deep, seeking food and moisture at a fast rate, all to achieve their purpose of lots of foliage and flowers. A daily watering is very important during both dry and wet spells. Even rain may not penetrate the ground around the sweet pea enough to support its thirsty nature, so be sure to double-check to ensure the foliage is not flopping and wilting. If it is, water it quickly.
The flowers come in droves, creating a wave of floral colour and scent. Sweet peas will give even more back if the spent flowers are deadheaded off the plant. In fact, if flowers are cut whilst at their peak for an indoor vase, the sweet pea will replace them in no time.
The more we tend to the sweet pea, the more it will give back to us. It is a two-way relationship, as with so much in the garden. Last week, Tom shared the four hydrangea checks gardeners must do now for 'lovely pink, blue and purple blooms' this summer.
