Brits Urged to Keep Windows Shut 9am-8pm During Heatwave

The Met Office is forecasting a heatwave next week, with some areas of the UK expected to reach highs of 36C on Wednesday, June 24 and Thursday, June 25. In response, experts are urging Britons to keep their windows, curtains, and blinds closed between 9am and 8pm to maintain cooler indoor temperatures.

Amber Heat Health Alerts Issued

A number of amber heat health alerts are in effect across the country, warning of the impact on healthcare and transport. These alerts have been issued for the East of England, London, South East, South West, North West, Midlands, and Yorkshire. A yellow heat health alert has also been issued for the North East of England. All alerts will remain in place until Friday, June 26.

Why Keep Windows Shut?

According to the government and experts at Which?, the UK's consumer champion, keeping windows, curtains, and blinds closed during the day helps rooms remain cooler by acting as a barrier against solar radiation and hot air. This is especially important when the temperature outside is higher than inside the room. Which? also advises opening curtains and blinds overnight after 9pm, if noise levels are tolerable.

Additional Tips to Keep Cool

The government recommends additional measures: open windows when the air feels cooler outside than inside, for example at night, and try to get air flowing through your home. Use electric fans if the air temperature is below 35°C, but avoid aiming the fan directly at your body as this can lead to dehydration. They also advise turning off lights and electrical equipment not in use, and going outside if it is cooler in the shade.
