Energy Expert Reveals Free Hack to Sleep Through Hot Nights
Free Hack for Sleeping Through Hot Nights Revealed

An energy expert has shared a simple and cost-free household hack to help people sleep through hot summer nights without relying on a fan. Katey Bell, from the energy advice team at the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE), recommends swapping your duvet for a damp bedsheet to cool down in less than five minutes.

The Problem with Fans

While many people turn to fans during heatwaves, they come with drawbacks. Fan noise can disrupt sleep, and running them increases electricity consumption, leading to higher energy bills. Additionally, fans can stir up dust and pollen, making the bedroom feel stuffy.

The Damp Sheet Solution

Bell suggests running a bedsheet under the tap, wringing it out thoroughly, and using it as a cover. "Nothing I've found works better for getting a good night's sleep in the heat," she said. The damp sheet helps reduce core body temperature, making it easier to fall asleep. It is important to ensure the sheet is not soaking wet by wringing it out well or using a washing machine's spin cycle to leave it damp rather than dripping.

Protecting Your Mattress

If applying the technique to bottom sheets, a waterproof mattress protector should be placed underneath to prevent moisture damage. Bell also suggests hanging a damp sheet in front of an open window. As water evaporates, it draws heat from the surrounding air, cooling the room before hot air circulates inside. Once the sheet dries, it can be dampened again to maintain a cooler bedroom temperature.
