Met Office Issues 11am-3pm Rule as UK Faces 40C Heatwave

The Met Office has issued a rare red extreme heat alert as temperatures are forecast to reach as high as 40C in parts of the UK. The alert, in conjunction with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), warns of a risk to life and significant impacts on health and social care services.

Red Alert Details

The red alert comes into effect at 9am on Wednesday, June 24, and remains in place until 9pm on Thursday, June 25. It covers parts of the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, South West England, Wales and West Midlands. According to the Met Office, a red alert signifies a 'risk to life' and warns that people should 'take action' to keep themselves safe. The warning states: "Dangerous weather is expected and, if you haven't already done so, you should take action now to keep yourself and others safe from the impact of the severe weather."

Guidance for the Public

The Met Office advises people to avoid exercising between 11am and 3pm when the sun is strongest. Guidance includes drinking plenty of fluids, keeping out of the sun, closing curtains in rooms that face the sun, and if going out, taking water, staying in the shade, and wearing sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat. For those near water, the Met Office recommends entering gradually to avoid cold-water shock and swimming at lifeguarded beaches.

Health and Travel Impacts

The UKHSA has issued amber and red heat-health alerts affecting all of England. Significant impacts are expected across health and social care services, including a rise in deaths and increased demand on services. The Met Office also warns of substantial disruption to travel, energy supplies, and possible widespread damage to property and infrastructure. People are advised to check road conditions, amend travel plans if necessary, and carry water on public transport.

Helping Others and Power Cuts

The Met Office urges people to help protect vulnerable individuals, including older people, those with underlying conditions, and those who live alone. If worried about health, people should ring NHS 111. Additionally, people are advised to prepare for potential power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.

Amber Alert and Greater Manchester Forecast

Alongside the red alert, an amber alert is in force across parts of the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, North West England, South West England, Wales, West Midlands, and Yorkshire. Greater Manchester is forecast to hit highs of 38C this week, peaking on Thursday afternoon (June 25).
