A stunning array of multi-coloured blooms has been unveiled at Sefton Park Palm House, marking months of dedicated work by local gardeners. The show gardens on the East Lawn opened to the public on June 10 as part of the Palm House's 25th anniversary celebrations since its restoration. The Grade II-listed Victorian dome, originally built in 1896, was severely damaged during the Liverpool Blitz in May 1941 and stood derelict for years before a successful 'Save the Palm House' campaign began in 1992.
Community Collaboration
Ten different community groups, schools, and charities, including Woodlands Hospice and Let's Talk CIC, created the show gardens. Kate Martinez, head of visitors and communities, highlighted the Palm House's evolution from an indoor garden for Victorians to a vital community hub for health and wellbeing. She expressed pride in showcasing the work of local groups through these gardens.
Unique Themes
Each garden features a distinct theme, such as a memorial garden, therapeutic horticulture, and a Wizard of Oz-inspired plot celebrating kindness, courage, and community. Groups like Woodlands Hospice created a 'Forget Me Not Garden' reflecting care and remembrance, while Let's Talk CIC's garden symbolized resilience and diversity.
Opening Details
The show gardens are open daily except Saturdays from June 10 to 21. Hours vary: Monday-Wednesday, Friday, Sunday 8am-5pm (Palm House from 10am); Thursday 8am-3pm; Saturdays closed. The event is part of a year-long series celebrating both the 25th anniversary of the reopening and the original 1896 opening, including library displays, talks, late summer openings, and a harvest festival.
