Morrisons has introduced a groundbreaking change across its 497 full-sized stores in the UK, becoming the first supermarket chain to install stoma-friendly toilets. The new facilities aim to enhance accessibility and comfort for shoppers and staff living with a stoma.
What Is a Stoma?
A stoma is a surgically created opening in the abdominal wall, connecting to the bowel to collect waste in a pouch instead of through the rectum. It is often created through procedures like colostomy for conditions such as cancer or bowel disease.
Why the Change Matters
Standard accessible toilets often lack the space and equipment needed for stoma care, making shopping trips stressful. Morrisons’ new facilities include wall hooks, supply shelves, discreet bins, and strategically placed mirrors to aid appliance checks. These features were developed with advice from Colostomy UK after Scottish Conservative MSP Edward Mountain shared his personal experience with a stoma following bowel cancer surgery.
Statements of Support
Edward Mountain said: “As a bowel cancer survivor, I cannot emphasise how important this is. These facilities will end the difficulties and embarrassment many of us faced.” Giovanni Cinque of Colostomy UK added: “Research shows suitable toilets are a major barrier. These simple features make a real difference to dignity and peace of mind.”
Morrisons stated: “By making these changes, we aim to champion independence, dignity, and comfort for our customers and colleagues.”
Impact on the Stoma Community
With one in 335 people in the UK living with a stoma, the initiative is expected to significantly improve daily life. Morrisons hopes other retailers will follow its lead.
