An animal welfare charity is seeking the owner of a young Shar Pei crossbreed who was abandoned at Ayr railway station in Scotland, leashed to a rail with a suitcase of his belongings. The Scottish SPCA discovered the dog, named Kai, last Friday.
Kai's suitcase contained a pillow, a toy, some food and a bowl. Despite being microchipped, the charity could only trace his previous owner, who sold him via Gumtree in 2013 and could not provide the buyer's address. The current owner could face charges under Scotland's Animal Health and Welfare Act.
Scottish SPCA inspector Stewart Taylor said the case highlights the risks of selling animals online. 'Regardless of the fact Kai was left with his belongings, this was still a cruel incident,' he said. The charity estimates Kai is two to three years old and described him as a 'lovely dog with a nice nature'.
The charity has received numerous offers to rehome Kai and will ensure he finds a suitable owner. Anyone with information is urged to contact the animal helpline at 03000 999 999.
