Aldi has announced a significant upgrade to its electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities, partnering with renewable energy firm Drax to enhance the charging experience for shoppers. The supermarket has transitioned approximately 1,200 EV chargers across over 250 stores in the UK to Drax's network, aiming to provide affordable, reliable, and convenient charging options.
New Charging Prices and Options
Shoppers can now choose between two pricing tiers: 40p per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for fast charging and 62p per kWh for rapid charging. This competitive pricing is designed to accommodate different journey needs. Drivers can check availability, view costs, and make payments via the Charge Assist app or by tapping a contactless card, with no subscription required.
Store Locations and Expansion
Locations that have already received the upgraded chargers include Aldi's Diss branch in Norfolk, as well as stores in Eastbourne, Durham, and Yate near Bristol. Aldi has also committed to installing chargers at approximately 20 new stores each year as part of its ongoing expansion strategy, ensuring a mix of fast and rapid chargers.
Commitment to Sustainability
Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, stated: 'We're committed to making sustainable choices more accessible for our customers, and we know many are looking for affordable, reliable and convenient ways to charge their cars. By expanding EV charging at more of our stores, we're helping to make that easier – and offering great-value charging while they shop.'
The rollout underscores Aldi's long-term dedication to sustainability and supports the UK's transition to electric vehicles. The government has initiated a consultation on phasing out new petrol and diesel car sales by 2030, with all new cars and vans required to be 100% zero emission by 2035. This move by Aldi aligns with national efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner transportation.
