As spring approaches, rats and mice become more active, seeking food and shelter. A simple, inexpensive solution to keep them at bay may already be in your kitchen: garlic. According to DIY expert Glen Peskett from Saxton Blades, the strong smell of garlic overwhelms rodents' sense of smell, disorienting them and deterring them from entering your home.
Garlic is budget-friendly, with a four-pack costing just 87p from Asda, equating to roughly 22p per bulb. Place garlic cloves around entry points such as basements, garages, kitchens, and lofts, particularly near cracks and doorways on the exterior of your property. Garlic oil, cayenne pepper, and apple cider vinegar are also effective deterrents.
In addition to using repellents, decluttering your home removes potential nesting sites. Keep bin lids sealed, empty bins regularly, and clean up spillages promptly to avoid attracting rodents. Inspect for cracks beneath doors or around vents and seal them, as even tiny gaps can allow rats and mice to squeeze through.
Failing to prepare for the spring breeding season can lead to a rat infestation, which is costly to control and poses health risks. By taking these simple steps, you can protect your property without breaking the bank.
