Albania Protests Surge Over Kushner Resort Project

Protests in Albania over a proposed luxury resort backed by Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, are set to intensify after opponents rejected an offer from the prime minister to discuss solutions. Thousands took to the streets of Tirana for a third consecutive day on Wednesday, some brandishing inflatable flamingos in a nod to feared environmental damage, amid mounting calls for the project to be blocked.

Conservation groups say work has begun in a protected coastal area, while Prime Minister Edi Rama insists the project will bring jobs and investment. The $1.6bn (£1.19bn) complex is planned for an area that includes the uninhabited island of Sazan, wetlands and coastal habitats in a marine national park. The waters are among the last refuges for the Mediterranean monk seal, and the area shelters more than 200 bird species, including flamingos and Dalmatian pelicans.

Aleksandr Trajce, executive director of the Protection and Preservation of the Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA), said: 'From start to finish there has been a total lack of transparency. We have seen no public consultation or public documentation regarding permits.' He added that if developers remove bulldozers and fences and restore habitats, then talks can begin.

Rama, who has defended the development as a milestone in Albania's transformation from Stalinist state to high-end holiday destination, proposed meeting protesters but also stated: 'There is absolutely no chance that the investment will stop as long as I am here.' Albania's special anti-corruption prosecution body, SPAK, has launched an inquiry into controversial legislative changes adopted in 2024 regarding protected areas.

Developers say they will progress responsibly. Asher Abehsera, chair of Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, which is developing the plans in partnership with Kushner's firm, said: 'Our focus remains on responsible stewardship, environmental enhancement, job creation, and creating long-term value for local communities.'
