Morrisons has unveiled a pioneering new scheme across hundreds of its UK stores. The supermarket chain has disclosed that, after listening to customer feedback, it has reached a "major milestone" by introducing stoma-friendly loos across all its branches, with accessible facilities.
Each of its 497 full-sized UK stores will now have wheelchair-accessible toilets equipped with stoma-friendly amenities. The chain recognises that for people with a stoma, an ordinary shopping trip can become especially difficult as standard accessible loos often don't have the required space and kit.
Morrisons has committed to promising "independence, dignity, and comfort" for shoppers and staff alike, reports Glasgow Live.
A statement from the retailer says: "For the many people living with a stoma, a simple trip to the shops can often come with hidden anxieties. Standard accessible toilets don't always provide the specific space or tools needed to manage a stoma with ease. By making these changes we aim to champion independence, dignity, and comfort for our customers and colleagues. Working alongside Colostomy UK and Scottish Parliament member Edward Mountain, we've ensured our facilities meet the real-world needs of the stoma community. Not all disabilities are invisible, but they all deserve the same level of care. These upgrades are part of our wider commitment to accessible shopping."
Features of the New Toilets
The scheme, which was launched earlier this year, sees accessible loos fitted with wall hooks to securely hold clothes or bags, shelving for medical equipment, discreet waste disposal bins, and carefully placed mirrors to help with quick and easy appliance checks.
Additional Changes at Morrisons
The 2026 rule won't be the only fresh change arriving at Morrisons outlets. The supermarket has also teamed up with the NHS to include cancer awareness messages on bath and shower products. The collection of nine new own-brand items features messages such as "be body aware" and "know the signs of cancer". Morrisons hopes the messaging will prompt shoppers to seek medical guidance if they spot anything unusual.
