Former MI6 Spy's Dossier Accuses China of Manipulating UK Elites Over Huawei

A controversial dossier compiled with the help of former MI6 spy Christopher Steele has accused China of attempting to manipulate key British establishment figures to support Huawei. The 86-page report, titled 'China's Elite Capture', alleges a campaign by Beijing to persuade influential individuals to back the Chinese telecoms giant and its strategic aims.

The dossier claims that Huawei is 'Beijing's strategic asset' and raises fears it could be used for state spying. It names several prominent figures, including Sir Kenneth Olisa, the Lord Lieutenant of London, as targets of the alleged campaign, describing them as 'useful idiots'. Those named have strenuously denied the claims, dismissing them as 'bizarre' and akin to a 'conspiracy theory'.

Huawei has categorically dismissed the dossier, stating its findings have 'no basis in fact'. The report was commissioned and funded by an American-Scottish film producer who has spoken out against the company, and Huawei suggests it is part of a US attempt to discredit the firm.

The dossier's release comes amid a diplomatic row over Huawei's involvement in the UK's 5G network. China's ambassador to Britain has warned that trade between the two countries could be at risk if the government changes its stance on Huawei. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reportedly reconsidering the issue amid security concerns.
