Manchester United reportedly believe Luis Enrique ticks three key boxes as they search for a new permanent manager. The Spain boss has long indicated he will not leave his post before the World Cup in Qatar later this year, but he remains a candidate alongside Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag.
According to ESPN, United admire Enrique for his technical credentials, including a commitment to attacking, entertaining football. The club have previously appointed defensive-minded managers such as David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, but now want someone capable of thrilling supporters.
Enrique also possesses a 'winning track record', having achieved a 76 per cent win rate at Barcelona, where he won two La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey trophies and the Champions League in 2015. He has also revitalised Spain on the international stage.
A third factor is Enrique's experience of coaching world-class players, having been one himself. However, when asked in November about the possibility of taking over at Old Trafford, he responded: 'Is today April Fools' Day?'
Pochettino remains the frontrunner, but PSG may sack him if they fail to progress past Real Madrid in the Champions League. Meanwhile, former United striker Louis Saha has urged the club to pursue Zinedine Zidane, citing his ability to improve player confidence and develop young talent.
