Scotland fans have been having fun with local police officers as Boston gets a taste of the Tartan Army's antics. A Boston cop was persuaded to perform keepy uppies in the middle of a FIFA fan zone, leaving fans in stitches.
Boston Cop Shows Off Skills
The Tartan Army has descended on the US city for Scotland's first World Cup in nearly 30 years, and they are certainly making their presence known, especially with the local police. Footage taken in the host city shows Bostoners getting a taste of Scottish banter ahead of the opening game against Haiti, which kicks off at 2am UK time.
One clip circulated on social media shows a local police officer wading into a crowd of Scots and other supporters at the FIFA Fan Festival at Boston City Hall Plaza. Cheers go up as the uniformed officer is convinced to do keepy uppies with a football. The policeman keeps the ball in the air for several rounds before dropping it, and is immediately embraced by buzzing Scotland fans in kilts and strips, who jump up and down in celebration.
Witness Recalls Atmosphere
Philipp Müller, 25, from Munich, Germany, moved to Boston last month and witnessed the camaraderie. He said the scene reminded him of Scotland fans' visit to his homeland for the Euros two years ago. Philipp told the Record: "The atmosphere was amazing. I thought the policeman had an issue with some fans, but he just wanted to show off his football skills, which were pretty impressive. He represented the openness of the US people to fans worldwide, especially the Scots."
Philipp added: "It reminded me of the opening game in Munich for the Euros in 2024. I have great memories of Scotland. I visited in high school and we sang Loch Lomond and Flower of Scotland. Seeing this last night added to those memories."
Social Media Praise
Hundreds of people have commented to praise the Tartan Army for their good humour. One wrote: "Brilliant fans. This is what the World Cup is all about. Best of luck, Scotland." Another said: "He's now starting for Scotland! Much love and respect for the Scots." A third commented: "Bringing humanity to the World Cup." A fourth added: "The big man has a bit of skill. Well done, officer. Hope you had a good laugh." A fifth said: "We are some crew. What a buzz being Scottish." Another wrote: "Make him an honorary Scot."
