Young Welsh fly-half Owen Erasmus signs for European champions Bordeaux
Welsh fly-half Owen Erasmus joins Bordeaux in dream move

Welsh fly-half Owen Erasmus has signed a contract with European champions Bordeaux-Begles, marking another significant step in his burgeoning career. The 20-year-old from Cardiff will join the French club next month, following a spell in South Africa with the Stormers.

Second dream move in months

Earlier this season, Erasmus moved from the Ospreys' academy to the Stormers, where he trained with the under-23 side alongside Springbok stars Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Damian Willemse. Now, he will link up with Bordeaux, the back-to-back Champions Cup winners, and share a club with top fly-half Matthieu Jalibert.

Erasmus had options to return to the UK, with English clubs expressing interest, but the opportunity to join Europe's best club proved irresistible.

A full-circle moment

The move to France holds personal significance for Erasmus and his family. His 94-year-old grandfather, who once taught in France, is helping him with the language ahead of the transfer.

Erasmus's career has already taken him through Bath's age-grade system, Millfield Sixth Form, and the Ospreys' academy. He was also linked with Saracens before choosing to return to Wales.

Playing style and ambitions

In a previous interview, Erasmus described his strengths as general variety in attack and passing, aiming to be seen as a running threat. He aspires to play international rugby, saying, 'One day, I'd love to play international rugby. Most boys do. It's just seeing where my hard work gets me.'

Bordeaux's signing of Erasmus underscores the club's commitment to nurturing young talent while maintaining its status as a European powerhouse.
