France vs Iraq World Cup Match at Risk from Storms

France and Iraq's World Cup Group I clash at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia faces significant disruption due to forecast violent storms. Kick-off is scheduled for 10pm local time. Iraq already faces a tough challenge containing stars like Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise, but severe weather may add to the difficulty.

Storm Threat and FIFA Safety Protocols

According to weather forecasts, violent storms are expected near the stadium, prompting a strong warning to fans. Under FIFA regulations, play must be halted and suspended if lightning is detected within eight miles of the venue. In such cases, spectators are evacuated from their seats to the concourse or emergency shelters.

Lauren Lambrugo, chief operating officer of Philadelphia Soccer 2026, explained: "They'll start to evacuate the stadium to the main concourse and seek emergency shelter. And then it has to wait 30 minutes prior to them bringing everybody back on the field." She added that the match would be broadcast and played the next day if necessary, with the final decision resting with FIFA and the Philadelphia Eagles team.

No Previous Postponements This Tournament

So far, no World Cup 2026 fixtures have been postponed due to weather. However, concerns arose after England's friendly with Costa Rica in Orlando, Florida, was delayed by an hour due to lightning strikes. Organisers urge fans to stay informed about severe weather alerts.

Michael DelBene, executive producer of the FIFA Fan Festival, said: "We've been very lucky, this past week has been wonderful. We encourage people to come out even if it's raining. In the event of dangerous weather, high winds or lighting or anything like that, we will evacuate the site."

France's Form and Mbappe's Impact

Meanwhile, France enters the match after a commanding 3-1 victory over Senegal, with Mbappe scoring twice, including a 30-yard strike that beat ex-Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The team aims to continue their strong World Cup campaign despite the potential weather disruption.
