Tyson Fury, the 37-year-old heavyweight boxing champion known as the Gypsy King, is reportedly planning to spend £6 million on a private island to moor his new £42 million superyacht. The fighter, who recently moved his family to the Isle of Man, is said to have his sights set on Drake's Island off the coast of Plymouth, Devon.
Fury's Island Ambitions
A source close to Fury told The Sun on Sunday that the boxer is having a superyacht built for his retirement and has expressed interest in purchasing Drake's Island. The source said: "Tyson wants to buy Drakes Island to store his super yacht. He says it’s protected because they have a naval base down there so his boat will be safe plus it’s close to Cornwall which he loves. He says they also do the best ice cream down there."
The source added: "The island is for sale for £6m but he plans to spend £20m doing up the buildings and electrics and everything. There’s no stopping Tyson when he’s got an idea in his head, it’s one thing after the other – he’s always 100 miles an hour. He’s sent pals a picture of the island and has been telling everyone he’s buying it."
Island's History and Current Status
Drake's Island, formerly known as St Nicholas Island, has a rich history dating back to the 16th century when it was fortified due to its strategic position. Military use continued until after World War II. Much of the island is a designated Scheduled Ancient Monument, with four principal buildings listed as Grade II. The site is also located within the Plymouth Sound and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation, known for its wildlife interest.
Businessman Morgan Phillips, who purchased the island in 2019 for a guide price of £6 million, is seeking a buyer or partner to "take it forward." The island was put on the market in July 2024 but failed to sell, and Phillips has now reinstructed commercial property experts Carter Jonas to try again.
Fury's Recent Life Changes
For many years, locals in Morecambe were accustomed to seeing Fury at the rubbish tip or queuing at the local chip shop. However, the champion has recently started a new chapter with his family in the Isle of Man, living in a property reportedly worth around £8 million. Now, it seems Fury may be eyeing up new pastures with this island purchase.
The Mirror has approached Tyson's representatives for comment on the reports.
