M&S has announced plans to replace its popular food hall in Ormskirk with an 18,000-square-foot megastore just a short drive away. The new store, triple the size of the current one, would include an in-store bakery, dedicated wine and flower shops, and a click-and-collect area. Located in Burscough, the site was formerly a care home and is only an eight-minute drive from Ormskirk high street.
Expansion Plans and Employment
If approved by West Lancashire Council, M&S would cease operations in Ormskirk and transfer all existing employees to the new store. The retailer also plans to recruit an additional 25 staff members. The megastore would feature 152 parking spaces, making it more accessible for residents across West Lancashire.
M&S has been voted Britain's best-loved supermarket for five consecutive years, and this move could expand access to its products for more locals.
Mixed Reactions from Residents
While some welcome the larger store, others express concerns. Kristian Yates, who works in Ormskirk town centre, told Lancashire Live: 'M&S is really important. It's convenient and sells good quality food. If we lose M&S, we could lose other shops too.'
Kate Travers, another local, called the potential move 'a shame,' noting that the current store is accessible for walkers, cyclists, and drivers. She added: 'If M&S goes to a retail park at Burscough, it'll increase traffic there, and people who don't drive will have difficulty getting there.'
The council has yet to make a final decision on the proposal.
M&S Expands in London
Meanwhile, M&S continues to grow in London with four new stores. An 8,900-square-foot store opened on Mitcham Road in Tooting Broadway last week. Another location on Tottenham Court Road opened June 9, featuring an in-store bakery and coffee counter. Stores in Sydenham at Bell Green Retail Park and Elephant and Castle are forthcoming, with opening dates to be announced.
