Android enthusiasts seeking the newest Samsung features can now access them without purchasing the latest flagship model. The Samsung Galaxy S24, despite being released in 2024, remains a strong contender in 2026, especially with the rollout of One UI 8.5. This software update brings many of the same enhancements found on the Galaxy S26 to older devices, making the S24 a more affordable alternative.
One UI 8.5 brings new capabilities to older Galaxy phones
Samsung has been commendable in delivering major software updates to its previous-generation smartphones. One UI 8.5, the Android iteration powering the Galaxy S26, is now being deployed to older models like the Galaxy S24. This update includes numerous features, such as AI-driven tools for image editing, writing assistance, and summarization. Notably, the Audio Eraser tool allows users to isolate and mute specific sounds, like crowd noise during a live sports stream. The Creative Studio AI image editor can transform rough sketches into polished artwork. Call Screening is another practical addition, answering calls from unknown numbers and transcribing conversations in real time.
Affordable contract deal for Samsung Galaxy S24
Currently, the Samsung Galaxy S24 is available for just £22 per month from Mobile Phones Direct on a 24-month contract. This deal includes 100GB of 5G data from O2 with unlimited minutes and texts, plus a one-off upfront cost of £19. At this price, it is significantly cheaper than the £879 Galaxy S26. The S24 boasts a 6.2-inch OLED display, a compact design, a triple rear camera setup, and seven years of software support from launch, ensuring updates until 2031. The offer is for the Onyx Black model with 128GB storage.
However, potential buyers should note that the monthly price will increase each April: to £24.50 in April 2027 and to £27 in April 2028. Compared to the Galaxy S26, the S24 has a smaller battery and slower processing speeds. An alternative for Android fans is the Google Pixel 9a, released in 2025, which receives updates until 2032 and is currently priced at £349 on Amazon, undercutting the S24's £699 asking price.
