Singer Charlotte Church has been granted planning permission to transform the former home of fashion designer Laura Ashley in the Elan Valley, Powys, into a wellness retreat. The proposal was unanimously approved by local councillors.
The plans include converting part of a barn into accommodation and installing solar panels. The retreat aims to offer wellbeing and healing experiences, capitalising on the scenic rural location.
Objections were raised last year, with Powys council highways officials warning of road safety issues due to the narrow country lane access. Concerns centred on the suitability of the C1219 road and the estimated increase in traffic volume.
However, a council highways manager stated that the number of vehicles would not rise significantly. Measures such as refreshing road signs and adding road markings were deemed sufficient to address visibility concerns at the junction.
A senior planning officer noted that the objections could not be sustained as the applicant had addressed the concerns within the proposal. The decision marks a green light for Church's venture in the Welsh countryside.
