Inquest: Woman Found Dead with Stab Wound to Chest

An inquest opening has heard that a woman found dead at her home in Caldicot had suffered a single stab wound to the chest. Caroline Jones, also known by her married name Caroline Thomas, was discovered unconscious and not breathing by Gwent Police officers at her address on Gwaun Y Cwrt, Green Lane, on June 4.

Inquest Details

At the inquest opening held in Newport on Monday, June 22, Coroner Rose Farmer stated that Ms Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Reading a statement from HM coroner's office Sarah Jones, the coroner said: 'On June 4 Gwent Police attended Caroline Thomas' home after concerns were raised about her. On arrival at the address Gwent Police found Caroline Thomas in the front room of the property with a single stab wound. She was unconscious and not breathing.'

Ambulance staff also attended, and life was declared extinct at 4.17am. Ms Jones' body was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where a forensic postmortem was conducted. She was identified by her sister.

Cause of Death

Following the postmortem carried out by Richard Jones, a provisional cause of death was given as '1A, stab wound to the chest [involving] the right ventricle of the heart.' Coroner Farmer opened the inquest on the grounds that the death was 'violent... as a result of a stab wound.'

Gwent Police enquiries are ongoing. The full inquest is expected to take place on March 17, 2027.
