A body has been recovered following a search for a 23-year-old British man who went missing while swimming in the sea off Albufeira, Portugal. The National Maritime Authority confirmed the discovery on Tuesday afternoon.
Search Operation Details
The man disappeared on Thursday, June 11, while swimming with a 19-year-old British companion at Peneco Beach. The younger man managed to leave the water and seek help, but the victim vanished. Search operations involved the Ferragudo Life Saving Station, Portimão Maritime Police, Albufeira Volunteer Firefighters with divers, the "SeaWatch" Project, Municipal Civil Protection Service with drones, and beach lifeguards. The search was suspended overnight and resumed the next morning.
Discovery of the Body
Portuguese police received an alert at 6:37 pm from a fisherman near the coast. Officers from the Portimão Local Maritime Police Command, Albufeira Volunteer Firefighters, and Municipal Civil Protection Service were dispatched. Upon arrival, Maritime Police and firefighters transported the victim to Albufeira Marina. A local Maritime Police official confirmed death at the scene and, after contacting the Public Prosecutor's Office, the body was taken to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of the Western Algarve.
The British Consulate in Portimão was informed and provided support to the 19-year-old companion and the victim's relatives. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has been contacted for comment.
