FIFA has revoked the credentials of Paraguayan commentator Jorge Vera after an explosive on-air tirade following Miguel Almiron's controversial red card against Turkiye. Almiron made history by becoming the first player ever sent off for covering his mouth during an altercation, under a rule designed to prevent racist or offensive remarks. Paraguay won the match 1-0, but Vera's outburst has cost him accreditation for the remainder of the World Cup.
Vera's Tirade Targets Referee and FIFA Officials
During the live broadcast, Vera branded Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton a thief and directed fury at FIFA President Gianni Infantino. "Thief, thief, Barton. They killed football. FIFA, you killed football," Vera declared. "Infantino, you're responsible for this." He continued: "FIFA, take responsibility for turning football into this. A disgrace. You should be ashamed, Infantino." Vera also targeted CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez, saying: "Alejandro Domínguez, less photos with Infantino. Grow a pair. You f------ thieves!"
Vera Defends Almiron and Challenges FIFA Rule
Vera leaped to Almiron's defence, questioning the rationale behind the red card. "What kind of racism could Miguel Almiron possibly use against the Turkish player? Show me some common sense," he said. The commentator's rant has been widely condemned, but Vera later apologised via social media, acknowledging he "went too far" and expressing regret for personal attacks.
Broadcaster ABC Cardinal Appeals FIFA's Decision
Paraguayan broadcaster ABC Cardinal, which Vera represents, released an eight-point statement urging FIFA to reconsider. The network argued that the sanction was "extreme and manifestly disproportionate" for a first-time infraction that was immediately acknowledged and apologised for. "We believe that the permanent cancellation of a credential for the entire duration of the tournament constitutes an extreme and manifestly disproportionate sanction," the statement read. "The apologies were presented, the error was admitted, and corrective measures were immediately implemented."
Vera's Public Apology
Following the revocation, Vera released a video apologising for losing control. "During the live transmission of the Paraguay-Turkey match, in the heat of the moment and the tension of the broadcast, I made comments that exceeded the limits," he said. "I used strong expressions and personal attacks against the referee and FIFA officials, which I deeply regret. I have already sent a formal note of rectification and apologies directly to the FIFA accreditation team." He added: "I want to apologize publicly to FIFA, to the refereeing team, to my colleagues, and especially to the audience for any offense my words may have caused."
Impact on Paraguay's World Cup Campaign
Despite the controversy, Paraguay secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Turkiye, keeping their knockout stage hopes alive. The win came amid the distraction of Almiron's historic red card and Vera's subsequent sanction. Paraguay now faces an uncertain path forward as they aim to advance without their star midfielder for the next match due to suspension.
