A man has admitted carrying out a series of serious assaults after six people were injured in a crowbar attack at a hospital. Omar Momand appeared before Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, facing charges including four counts of wounding with intent and attempted wounding following the incident at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-le-Willows in December 2025.
Court Proceedings
The 20-year-old, of Bradleigh Road in Newton-le-Willows, appeared via video link from a secure psychiatric unit, wearing a turquoise Nike t-shirt. He confirmed his name and denied charges of wounding three women and a man with intent. However, Momand pleaded guilty to the unlawful wounding of these same four victims. He also admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a fourth woman, as well as affray, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, criminal damage to computer equipment and building materials at the hospital, and possession of cannabis.
Momand, originally from Afghanistan, pleaded not guilty to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent to a fifth woman by striking her to the head with a metal bar. He will face a trial lasting four to five days, scheduled for the week of September 14, 2025, at the same court.
Judge Stuart Driver KC adjourned the case and remanded Momand into custody, stating: "Omar Momand, your trial will take place in the week of the 14th of September. You are remanded in custody. That is the end of today's hearing."
Details of the Attack
Merseyside Police were called to the hospital at around midday on December 30, 2025, after reports that a man had requested an appointment and became "increasingly agitated" when refused. He damaged a countertop before assaulting several people with a weapon believed to be a crowbar. Six people were injured, sustaining head lacerations, bruising, and injuries to arms and hands.
Sugedran Shanmugaraja, a worker at a Best One store opposite the hospital, told reporters that a woman ran into the shop seeking help, saying: "She had a lot of blood at the back of her head and on her shoulder. She was shaking and upset. Next thing there were 10 or 15 police cars and an ambulance."
Sources reported that some people inside the hospital barricaded themselves in rooms as the incident unfolded. A resident commented: "You don't expect something like that to happen at a hospital of all places. I just hope everyone involved is okay."
