Nottinghamshire Police have launched a public appeal for information after a cherished 35-year-old tortoise was reported stolen from a family garden in Beckingham.
Beloved Pet Vanishes During Holiday
The reptile, named George, disappeared from his home on Church Street, Beckingham, near Retford. Officers believe the theft occurred sometime between Friday, October 25 and Friday, November 1.
George's owner returned from a holiday to find the tortoise missing and his cage had been turned upside down. Despite the owner having implemented several security measures to keep George safe, the beloved pet was gone.
Family 'Distraught' as Hibernation Nears
Sergeant James Robinson of Nottinghamshire Police emphasised the impact of the loss. "George's family are understandably distraught about losing their long-time pet," he said.
"The victim had implemented various security measures to keep the tortoise safe, so to return home and find him missing was a big shock for them."
The police are particularly concerned for George's welfare with the approaching hibernation season. "Tortoises require specific care and knowledge to remain happy and healthy, and with hibernation time coming up, George's family are understandably anxious to bring him home," Sergeant Robinson added.
