Two cats were left abandoned in their carriers on a bench outside Homeward Bound Pet Rescue near Nevada beach in Las Vegas. The rescue centre staff arrived to find the cats with a handwritten note that began with the words "I'm sorry", leaving the team "in tears" according to the centre's social media post.
Heartbreaking Note Left by Former Owners
The note, placed on top of one of the carriers, read: "I'm sorry I can't take care of my cats anymore. They are both very sweet, please be patient they are scared. They are 5-years-old. I have had them since they were babies. I am so sorry."
The rescue centre, which is already overflowing with animals, said: "We don't even have the words right now. Two cats. Left outside our door. In carriers. With a note. Our team found them, and honestly... there were tears."
Rescue Centre Struggles with Overcapacity
Despite being over capacity, the team made room to keep the cats together, safe, and fed. The centre stated: "Yet somehow, we will make room. We always try. Tonight, these cats are safe. They have food, water, shelter, and people who will care for them. But situations like this are happening far too often, and every unexpected arrival stretches our resources even further."
The centre has dealt with similar abandonment cases dozens of times, highlighting a growing problem in the area.
Public Reaction
People commented under the rescue centre's post to praise the staff for their care, while others expressed anger at the abandonment. One commenter said: "This is heartbreaking for everyone. Thank you for taking them in and thank you (and sorry) to their humans. Thank you for trying and sorry for what you are going through. We all hope you are okay. Rest assured your furbabies are in good hands." Another added: "That's horrible! What kind of person does that to a pet!"
