Murder Probe in Byker After Man Dies in Suspected Assault

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in his 20s after a suspected attack in Byker. Emergency services were called to Shields Road at around 7.30pm on Tuesday following reports of an assault.

Police, paramedics, and the air ambulance attended the scene, where the man was found with serious injuries. He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary but died shortly after. His next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from officers.

Three individuals have been arrested on suspicion of murder: two men aged 24 and 22, and a 16-year-old boy. All remain in police custody. A cordon remains in place on Shields Road as investigative work continues.

Police Appeal for Information

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton of the Major Investigation Team said: "This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are firmly with the family of the man who has sadly lost his life. We will offer them all of the support we can and would ask that their privacy is respected at this difficult time."

He added: "We have launched a full investigation into the circumstances around the man’s death and arrested three people on suspicion of murder. We would like to reassure those in the local community that our officers remain in the area to carry out a wide range of enquiries to ascertain exactly what happened. I would also ask anyone with information regarding what took place yesterday evening to contact us. Your information could be of vital importance towards our investigation."
