Russia Sets Christian Shrine Ablaze in Deliberate Ukraine Attack Killing Five
Russia Strikes Christian Shrine in Ukraine, Killing Five

A major Russian assault on Ukraine has resulted in five deaths and at least 20 injuries, while a religious landmark was set ablaze. The attack ignited a fire at one of the nation's most important religious sites in the capital Kyiv, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

Details of the Attack

The incident occurred on Monday, June 15, with images from the scene depicting residential buildings consumed by flames following the event. The five deceased were killed in Kharkiv by a second Russian strike as they battled a fire sparked by an earlier attack, according to interior minister Ihor Klymenko. The minister further stated that at least five other emergency workers sustained injuries.

Targeting a Christian Shrine

Tymur Tkachenko, Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, accused Russia of intentionally targeting "the heart of one of the largest Christian shrines" due to the extensive damage at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a monastic complex. During the overnight attack, the roof of the Dormition Cathedral caught fire, reported Metropolitan Epiphanius, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. He denounced the strike as another Russian crime "against humanity, against history, against Christianity" and called for prayers to preserve the site.

Widespread Destruction

A series of potent explosions reverberated across Kyiv, accompanied by a barrage of ballistic missiles and Shahed drones, as numerous individuals sought refuge underground and officials advised residents to seek shelter. "Kyiv is under the main strike. There is significant destruction of civilian infrastructure," Klymenko declared. Twenty individuals, including a child, sought medical assistance in the capital, Tkachenko reported. He revealed that five strikes targeted civilian locations in the city's Shevchenkivskyi district in less than half an hour, including a 25-storey flat building, while a market and a grocery shop were set ablaze. In the Obolonskyi district, a nine-storey residential building was directly hit. "This is their deliberate decision," he stated.
